What famous bassists took bass lessons?

I'm contemplating taking bass lessons. I was originally going to teach
myself because I thought most famous bassists were self-taught and
money's tight at the moment. But it would probably do me some good. So
to help me make up my mind, I would like to know if most famous
bassists took lessons and, if so, what ones? It would also help to
know self-taught bassists.
